“Yes they will be able to say 'we stood with Ukraine,' in the immediate aftermath. But when Donald Trump hits our allies with new tariffs and waives sanctions on Russia, the propaganda victory for Putin will be lasting, and the damage will be embedded in U.S. law.
“Burgum and the Trump Administration are disregarding the risks and rushing this towering monument to Trump’s vanity because they believe Republicans will get crushed in November. They believe, I hope correctly, that the project will be endangered by a new Democratic majority that actually stands up to Trump.
“The Administration has not won the legal battle over the proposal, which is plainly illegal without congressional authorization. All of us who oppose it must stand up and redouble our efforts to stop this monstrosity.
“This project is not even close to being ready for prime time.
“The person who was telling me about writing the amendment also thought that Trump would still hate it, because he and [White House trade adviser Peter] Navarro want carte blanche tariff authority.
“Trump's trade war with Canada is doing lasting damage to one of our oldest and most important strategic alliances. It may take years to fix what Trump is breaking if it can be fixed at all. The stupidity of Trump's tariffs and trade policies truly boggles the mind.
“We’re certainly very concerned that it’s the same group of ICE agents running the corridor along Columbia Pike.
“Last week, ICE agents threatened Carolina Molina with a gun and lied about her following them and trying to run them over. This dangerous and dishonest nonsense, unfortunately, matches what we’ve seen from ICE, not just in Virginia, but across the country. We want these agents off our streets and out of our communities.
“The injuries to Jose Mejia Hernandez and his account of how he received them are extremely disturbing, and I am seeking further details about what happened to him in Arlington. It is essential to establish the facts in this case, and, if this is another instance of unjustified violence by ICE agents, to hold them accountable.
“I urge Northern Virginians to exercise extreme caution. ICE agents are here, they are regularly ignoring their training and departmental regulations that call for de-escalation, they are disappearing people, and they are all too frequently becoming out of control or violent.
“While I am relieved that she is safe, the habitual dishonesty and dangerous and unjustified escalation seen in this video matches what we have seen from ICE agents across the country. This kind of misconduct and threat of force against members of our communities cannot be tolerated. I will be demanding answers and consequences.
“This bill’s sanctions still contain the broadest possible waiver authority for President Trump, who already has the power to impose these sanctions on Russia under U.S. law but has refused to do so.
“We don't build monuments and memorials to leaders who are still alive in America. Many of my colleagues are supporting my bill to reinforce Congress' power of the purse, stop the arch, and limit Donald Trump from building more monuments to his own ego.
“Trump's slush fund would give nearly $2 BILLION in taxpayer dollars to his supporters, including violent criminals. He's just stealing your money. There's no transparency, we won't know who gets paid, or how much. It's illegal and corrupt as hell. We're fighting it in court.
