“We have no choice but to hold him in contempt. … Subpoenas are not suggestions; they carry the force of law and require full compliance.
“It doesn't matter how wealthy, powerful, or connected you are, no one gets to pick and choose which lawful congressional subpoenas they will obey. … After consulting with Committee members, we will defend Congress's constitutional authority and take action to hold Mr. Black accountable for his continued defiance of lawful congressional subpoenas.
“I had stuff already planned in my congressional district or I would be there. I don't think most members of Congress are on a regular schedule to go to party conventions.
“Of all the powerful billionaires and political people we've brought in for interview and depositions, this is the first time anyone's filed suit.
“It's a shame Leon Black is hiding behind litigation rather than provide answers to the American people.
“The Committee demands full compliance with the subpoena and rejects any attempts at further disrupting or delaying this investigation.
“We need the NDAs to be able to move forward with the investigation.
“What documents remain, why they haven't been turned over... We're going to try to determine whether or not there can be more documents legally turned over. I want every document, I don't want anything held back.
“Right off the bat he corrected his statement on the time that he came to the island. I feel like Lutnick has been very transparent. He came in voluntarily.
“He wasn't 100% truthful with whether or not he had been on the island. If we find that there were any misstatements by Mr. Lutnick, it's a felony to lie to Congress.
“We'll talk about it.
“The Oversight Committee is investigating the possible mismanagement of the federal government's investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The American people deserve answers about how the Department of Justice handled these files. The subpoena was issued to compel that testimony, and we will work with the Department of Justice to ensure it is honored.
“I'm very happy that we had a bipartisan vote today to hold the Clintons in contempt of Congress, and this shows that no one's above the law.
“I felt like in my heart, there would be Democrats for it, and I'm very, very proud of the ones who did.
