“This has been grossly abused in recent years. I'm very disappointed in that outcome.

“Today, we just offered a simple, clean, three-week extension of the FISA national security law. The Democrats, 199 of them, voted against a clean, three-week extension for political purposes.
“With today's vote, House and Senate Republicans have officially ended the third Democrat government shutdown of this Congress. And here's the end result of Democrats' record-setting obstruction: CBP and ICE will now be funded for the remainder of President Trump's term and Democrats will have no ability to defund these agencies in the 119th or 120th Congresses. We have three full years of funding. What we've done now by funding it for three years, we've taken away [Democrats'] ability to cut that funding, to block that funding or to take hostage the funding for the remainder of the Trump administration.
“The entire world has an interest in the Strait of Hormuz being reopened for commerce.
“The president is now in the process of concluding a peace agreement, and we have to allow him the latitude to do that.
“[Johnson predicted that a deal with Iran would bring gas prices down and be "a big thing" for the US midterm elections.]
“President Trump is the ONLY one who could have gotten Iran — the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism — to the negotiating table. We are greatly encouraged to learn a PEACE DEAL in Iran is underway — and look forward to learning more about the specifics. We'll get the Strait of Hormuz reopened, which will be great for gas prices here and stability around the world.
“He votes with the Democrats…and has been a thorn in my side for a LONG TIME. We need team players…who understand the America First agenda!
“Sometimes when you have a small margin as we do, people have different ideas, different priorities about very contentious pieces of legislation, but we got it done because ultimately we just used patience and frankly prayer. Democrats got absolutely nothing for their political charade and shenanigans.
“Kelly and I were at the event tonight, and we're thankful no innocent people were harmed and everyone is now safe. We're grateful as always for the law enforcement and first responders who acted so quickly to bring the situation under control.
“In the coming days, the House will be working closely with the Senate as they commence on that reconciliation process. The sequencing is important. We've got to make sure that we don't isolate and, as I say, make an orphan out of key agencies of the department.
“We'll figure this out. We've got lots of discussion today and in the coming days to make sure we can get that through and I think we will.
“We were very close tonight.
“I was taken a little bit aback, just honestly, frankly, by something that he said about those who engage in war, that Jesus doesn't hear their prayers. There's something called the just war doctrine. There's a time to every purpose under heaven. I'm not one to criticize clerics — a pontiff or any religious leader can say anything they want. But obviously if you wade into political waters, I think you should expect some political response, and I think the pope's received some of that. These are matters that people of good faith and good sense can debate and think through.
“The plan is to move a clean extension of FISA for at least 18 months. Last time it was up for reauthorization, we instituted 56 substantive reforms to FISA. By every measure and review, those are working just as we planned.
“We're not at war right now. This is a defensive operation. The president is acting within his constitutional authority to protect American interests and personnel.
“We appreciate and share the President's determination to once and for all bring an end to the Democrat DHS shutdown. In the coming days, Republicans in the Senate and House will be following through on the President's directive by fully funding the entire Department of Homeland Security on two parallel tracks: through the appropriations process and through the reconciliation process.
“The Democrat's DHS shutdown strategy is clear: Block paychecks for TSA officers and force Americans to wait in lines at airports across the country. It's madness.
“Passing a war powers resolution at this moment would be a frightening prospect. It would take the ability of our commander in chief, the president, take his authority away right now to finish this job. The operation has been necessary, lawful and effective. Reversing course would play right into the hands of the enemy.
“Iran is facing the severe consequences of its evil actions.
