Mayor of New York City since January 1, 2026. First Muslim and first Asian American mayor of NYC. Democratic Socialist. Won the November 2025 general election with 50.78% of the vote, defeating Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Previously won the Democratic primary in June 2025 in an upset over Cuomo. Sworn in by NY Attorney General Letitia James in the abandoned City Hall subway station, with a public inauguration administered by Sen. Bernie Sanders.
