Trump's 'Fight Back, Minnesota' Somali Post
On the afternoon of Oct. 8, 2026, President Trump posted on Truth Social that "the once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants," that there was "Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State," and that "the people of Minnesota must fight back. You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government." He called Gov. Tim Walz "an incompetent thief," wrote "Fight back Minnesota, fight back! If you need, the Federal Government will come to your rescue," and said Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey "must immediately ask for Federal help." The post followed federal charges in an alleged ISIS-inspired plot against the Mall of America and a shooting at an Eden Prairie high school football game that local law enforcement described as gang-related. Trump did not say what he wanted Minnesotans to do. Walz, Frey and Attorney General Keith Ellison condemned the post within hours, and Ellison warned he would go back to court if the administration attempted another federal surge like the ICE operation the state fought earlier in the year. Faith leaders and CAIR-Minnesota said the post put a target on Somali Americans, and mosques in the Twin Cities stepped up security patrols.
“[Written statement addressed to Trump:] Mr. President, Somali Minnesotans are your constituents, too. … When a president tells people to "fight back" while singling out an entire community, those words carry consequences. [He added that] people who break the law should be held accountable.”
