“[Letter to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles from the top Democratic appropriators, demanding the ad be taken off the air immediately:] This is the sort of government propaganda one might expect in North Korea, not the United States of America.
“This is an extraordinarily dangerous proposal. The White House is playing politics with critical research into devastating illnesses like cancer, Alzheimer's, and heart disease. Funding for life-saving biomedical research should never – ever – be subject to political litmus tests. … It must not be allowed to move forward.
“It was an opportunity for us to hear directly from people living through the conflict, a chance for us as appropriators to see how U.S. tax dollars, taxpayer dollars, are being used.
“This is extraordinary… it's outrageous. It's an outrageous commentary. I don't believe he even knows or understands what he's speaking about. I really don't think he understands or he gets it.
“[If I] chair the Appropriations Committee, we will increase funds. And if we've got that same case in the Senate, then we've got the House and the Senate in sync to try to move forward.
“These funds were provided for lifesaving medical research, not as extra money for the Department of Defense. It is no secret that the Department of Defense is facing enormous financial pressure because of President Trump’s war of choice with Iran. But the Trump administration cannot make American patients, families, and scientists pay the price.
“Circumventing Congress to divert money intended to help Americans who are exposed to HIV, influenza, tuberculosis, and other deadly diseases—and directing those funds to the Department of Defense—is beyond the pale. DoD already has programs, funded by Congress, to research and develop medical countermeasures to chemical, biological, and nuclear threats, and does not need NIH funding to do so. The administration must provide Congress with a full accounting of how this interagency agreement was developed and exactly how much taxpayer money it is trying to transfer to DoD.
“This secretive attempt to siphon research funds away from NIH is outrageous. The interagency agreement needs to be terminated immediately.
“While the bill temporarily blocks the proposed OMB rule, the fight must continue. The Senate bill forces OMB to continue reviewing the half-million comments that were submitted, but Congress must permanently prevent this corrupt, harmful power grab before the new deadline of December 11.
“The men and women of Sikorsky produce the world’s finest helicopters, and their top-notch craftsmanship and innovation deserve to be celebrated. The issue of Marine One engine exhaust burning the White House South Lawn goes back years and must be addressed to bring Sikorsky’s next-generation Marine One helicopters into service. But once again, President Trump is rushing to complete yet another White House project without providing the American people with the transparency they deserve. It’s a slap in the face to workers who’ll have to work overtime and the taxpayers who may end up footing the bill.
“Congress cannot entrust FISA powers and national security to someone who has never held a security clearance and has already proven himself eager to use his public office in pursuit of the President's political vengeance.
“Simply put, you just gave the President and his family a tax immunity to the tune of about $100 million. The only way to stop Trump's nearly $2 billion MAGA slush fund and his blank check to commit tax fraud is to abolish it by law — permanently. The president, his associates, and family members were innocent of whatever they were being investigated for, the investigation would surely bear that out. But now we will never know.
