Trump Defeats Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky GOP Primary

May 20, 2026

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), one of Trump's most vocal Republican critics, was defeated 55-45 by Trump-endorsed Navy SEAL veteran Ed Gallrein in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District primary on May 20, 2026. The race — the most expensive House primary in U.S. history at over $32 million spent — was widely seen as a referendum on Trump's hold over the Republican Party, coming after Massie broke with the president on Iran, the "One Big Beautiful Bill," and the Epstein files. The result continued Trump's successful primary purge campaign, following prior victories over Sen. Bill Cassidy and five Indiana state senators.

Welcome to the most expensive congressional primary ever in the 250-year history of this country. It's not just the most expensive. This thing went on longer than Vietnam.

I am proud and thankful to have served in the U.S. House of Representatives with my friend Thomas Massie, a giant among weak pathetic men. Releasing the Epstein files was our demise. But it was worth every single bit because now everyone knows the truth. You are ruled by the Epstein class that cares nothing about you and your elected leaders are bought and controlled by a foreign lobby.

I'm proud here to stand with Ed Gallrein, because he led warriors in combat. When conservatives are fighting the most radical left in American history, too often Massie's instinct is to throw elbows at fellow Republicans...You can send a warrior, reinforcements for the president in our shared fight against the radical left. Or you can send an obstructionist.
