Iran-US Ceasefire Unraveling Within Hours

April 8, 2026

The two-week ceasefire announced April 7, 2026 began breaking down almost immediately. Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the U.S. of violating three of Iran's 10 conditions: Israel continued striking Hezbollah in Lebanon (which Iran considers covered by the truce), Trump publicly denied Iran's claim that the framework permits uranium enrichment, and "an intruding drone" was destroyed in Fars Province. Iran responded by closing the Strait of Hormuz again. The U.S. denied that Lebanon was included in the ceasefire and demanded the Strait be reopened immediately. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar all reported missile and drone attacks within hours of the agreement.

The United States never once said Lebanon was part of the ceasefire. We never made that promise. Iran's foreign minister has been responding well to the ceasefire, but others in the country have been lying about the agreement. This is why I say this is a fragile truce. If Iran wants this to fall apart over Lebanon, that's on them.

We had a target set, locked and loaded — infrastructure, bridges, power plants. Iran knew exactly the scope of what we were capable of. We'll be hanging around. We're not going anywhere. Our troops are prepared to defend, prepared to go on offense, prepared to restart at a moment's notice. This agreement means that they will never, ever possess a nuclear weapon.

Allowing Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz would be a history-changing win for Tehran. The level of incompetence is both stunning and heartbreaking. Hard to believe that a rushed agreement made under the threat of civilization annihilation doesn't seem to be holding together for more than 24 hours.

A cease-fire and negotiations with the United States on ending this war is unreasonable when the United States has already violated three of Iran's ten conditions. Lebanon is included in the ceasefire agreement we reached, but Israel has continued strikes on Lebanon. The framework explicitly preserves Iran's right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes — a right Trump has now denied. And an intruding drone entered Iranian airspace and was destroyed in the city of Lar in Fars Province. We will not be bound by an agreement the other side refuses to honor.

Our operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon will continue. The ceasefire with Iran does not — and never did — extend to our defensive actions against Hezbollah. We have struck more than a hundred command centers and military sites belonging to Iran-backed Hezbollah. Israel will not stop until the threat to our northern border is eliminated.

I'm glad there is a reported ceasefire deal with Iran. But we shouldn't be in this illegal war in the first place. And Donald Trump can't simply threaten war crimes with impunity. Congress needs to get back in session now to stop this war and remove Donald Trump.
