US-Iran Two-Week Ceasefire (Pakistan-Brokered)

April 7, 2026

On April 7, 2026 — less than two hours before President Trump's deadline to "annihilate" Iran — the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The deal is built on a 10-point Iranian peace proposal, with talks to begin in Islamabad on April 10. The ceasefire was almost immediately complicated: the Farsi version of Iran's plan includes "acceptance of enrichment" while the English version omits it; Pakistan said Lebanon is included while Netanyahu insists it is not, with Israel launching its largest wave of strikes on Hezbollah hours into the truce; and explosions hit Iranian oil sites at Lavan and Sirri Islands the same day.

This is a fragile truce. The work of the next two weeks will determine whether we can build a lasting agreement or whether we return to the situation we were in twenty-four hours ago. The president has made his position clear: no enrichment, full reopening of the Strait, and verifiable commitments.

The Iranian regime is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans. It's about time we had a President willing to defend Americans and willing to use leverage to bring this regime to the negotiating table. The president has done what no other administration was willing to do.

A two-week cease-fire is insufficient. We need a permanent end to Donald Trump's reckless war of choice. The House must come back into session immediately and vote to end this reckless war of choice in the Middle East. The American people deserve better than a president who threatens to wipe out civilizations one day and announces a temporary pause the next.

I appreciate the hard work of all involved in trying to find a diplomatic solution. As to an Iranian ten point proposal to end the war, I look forward to reviewing it at the appropriate time and its submission to Congress for a vote, like we did with the Obama JCPOA. We must remember that the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by Iran after the start of the war, destroying freedom of navigation. Going forward, it is imperative Iran is not rewarded for this hostile act against the world. All highly enriched uranium must be controlled by the U.S. and removed from Iran to prevent them from having a dirty bomb or returning to the enrichment business.

I'm glad Trump backed off and is desperately searching for any sort of exit ramp from his ridiculous bluster. But two weeks is not a peace deal — it's a pause. Congress still needs to weigh in on whether this country goes back to war or finds a way out of one the president started without authorization.

Iran has provided a 10-point peace proposal that we believe is a workable basis on which to negotiate. There will be a COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz. We have agreed to a two-week pause on all attacks. Talks will begin in Islamabad on Friday under the mediation of Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan.

The warring sides have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere. This is EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. I thank both the United States and Iran for their courage in stepping back from the brink, and extend an invitation to their delegations to Islamabad on Friday, 10th April 2026, to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes.
